Playing in three games in six days, the WVU basketball team had a fast start to its 2025-2026 season.
Starting the season with a 70-54 win over Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday, the Mountaineers had their biggest test of the young season against Campbell, when they scratched a close 73-65 win over Campbell on Thursday, before wrapping up their third win of the week (and the season) on Sunday against Leigh, with a final score of 69-47.
Through the first three games, Honor Huff – one of the best three-point shooters in the country – is leading the way for WVU, averaging 19.5 points per game so far in the 20205-2026 season. North Texas transfer Brenen Lorient, who followed Ross Hodge from North Texas to Morgantown, is leading the team in rebounds per game, pulling down 11 rebounds per game so far this season. Experienced ball-handler Jasper Floyd, another North Texas transfer, is leading the team in assists per game (4.0) and steals per game (2.5).
It has been a good start for the Mountaineers, but the early start to the season should not hold too much stock going against opponents like Campbell and Leigh. WVU will start to pick up the intensity in opponents starting this week, with a Thursday matchup against Pitt in this year's hardwood rendition of The Backyard Brawl before heading to the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic, starting on November 21. WVU will take on Clemson and either Georgia or Xavier, depending on how the previous games in the Charleston Classic unfold.
WVU will face its first Power 5 program in Pitt, as the Mountaineers will play their fourth consecutive home game this season at Hope Coliseum. Tip-off scheduled for 6 PM EST and will be aired on FS1.
