Six Mountaineers included in D1 Baseball’s Top 100 rankings
Kresser has been the everyday shortstop this season after getting significant playing time last season with the injury to WVU baseball legend JJ Wetherholt. A .311 average and .884 OPS slugger, Kresser has had a great season so far in 2025. Featuring a great combination of speed, power, and hitting for average, Kresser has seen the majority of his plate appearances at the top of this lineup. And with a lineup that is so deep with talent, hitting leadoff is a great testament of what Kresser is capable of contributing.
The 2025 Big 12 Preseason Team catcher, Sauve, is adding another great season to his future MLB draft stock. Hailing from Boiler Springs, Pennsylvania, Sauve is hitting .310 and is posting a 951 OPS with two home runs and 16 RBIs. The power is not yet showing up as home runs on the stat sheet, but Sauve is doing a great job of getting on base and driving the ball for some extra-base hits, as evidenced by his .951 OPS.
Rising slugging star King has been a pleasant surprise to this WVU offense. Through the first 26 games, King has been on a tear at the plate, hitting .293 with a very impressive .982 OPS. King has two home runs and 18 RBIs in 2025. Like Kresser. King’s 10 stolen bases display his great combination of speed and power.
Getting early recognition on the season with a Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award, Chase Meyer has been the most consistent and lights-out reliever out of the WVU bullpen. Meyer (2.91 ERA) has pitched 21.2 innings while also logging 32 strikeouts with only 11 walks. That stat line is almost good for a 3/1 K/BB ratio, which is a great indication of pitcher success. Meyer has been constantly used in high-leverage situations by first-year head coach Steve Sabins, and he has delivered.
Bassinger started the season by getting three saves in the first four games for WVU. Although Meyer and Kartsonas have taken over the closer role in recent games, Bassinger is still a Mountaineer reliever that Sabins has trusted in late-game situations. In 20.2 innings pitched, Bassinger (3.48 ERA) has 19 strikeouts with only four walks. Similar to Meyer, Bassinger’s close to 5/1 K/BB ratio proves the senior pitcher is filling up the strike zone and avoiding giving too many free passes to opposing hitters.
Finally, Carson Estridge is amid a great season on the mound for WVU. After WVU fans implored Sabins to use him in the starting rotation, Estridge has made two starts in the last two series for WVU (against Arizona and BYU). During his two starts and seven appearances, Estridge (4.05 ERA) has pitched 26.2 innings with 22 strikeouts and seven walks allowed.
These WVU stars have earned their recognition in ranking in D1 Baseball’s Top-100 list. The six Mountaineers that were ranked have been such a crucial part of the success that WVU has seen in 2025.
