West Virginia football is gearing up for another season with a roster overhaul, as the Mountaineers have seen a large chunk of players hit the transfer portal and several more graduate, while they are set to add over 80 players between their high school and JUCO signing class and their transfer portal additions.
Most of the team – at least the returners and newcomers who have enrolled for the spring – are now on campus, and winter workouts have gotten underway. The Mountaineers have now released their Student-Athlete of the Week and Weight Room Warriors of the Week for the first two full weeks of team activities, and we have an early glimpse at who might be set to stand out in 2026.
West Virginia Mountaineers name Student-Athlete of the Week, Weight Room Warriors of the Week
For the first week of offseason activities to begin the winter, true freshman Matt Sieg was named Student-Athlete of the Week, while true freshman Kevin Brown and senior transfers Geimere Latimer II and Tyler Stolsky were named Weight Room Warriors of the Week.
Sieg was the highest-ranked recruit of the 2026 class for the Mountaineers, and was recently named the 2025 National High School Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club. Brown, also a true freshman, was the second-best rated player in the recruiting class, and one of the most highly-touted offensive tackles in his recruiting class.
Latimer and Stolsky, meanwhile, are also newcomers, but joined through the transfer portal – Latimer saw significant action at slot corner for Wisconsin last season and previously played for Rich Rodriguez and Zac Alley at Jacksonville State. Stolsky started at Florida Atlantic in 2025 and finished the season with 86 tackles, two pass deflections, and one sack, and previously racked up 34 tackles in two seasons with Minnesota.
This past week, the Mountaineers named returning senior offensive tackle Malik Agbo as Student-Athlete of the Week, while true freshman Rickey Giles and returning sophomore Ryan Ward and junior Nick Krahe were named Weight Room Warriors of the Week.
Agbo saw significant action as a depth piece in his first season with the Mountaineers in 2025, while Krahe started in every game at left tackle on the offensive line for the Mountaineers.
Ward, meanwhile, saw plenty of action at tight end in his first season with the Mountaineers, playing in all 12 games and finishing with six receptions for 41 yards and one touchdown. Giles will enter his freshman year after signing with the Mountaineers as a three-star recruit.
