WVU football among teams with most transfer portal entries this offseason

Whether the second consecutive offseason exodus of players for the Mountaineers is a bad thing or a good thing is yet to be determined.

For the second straight offseason, the West Virginia Mountaineers have seen a significant number of players leave the program.

It was to be expected last year, of course. Former head coach Neal Brown was fired at the end of the season, and Rich Rodriguez was brought in as the new head coach. Unsurprisingly, several of Brown's athletes decided to depart the program, and Rodriguez was a bit behind the 8-ball when it came to planning a transfer portal class.

Then, with a second portal window open, another wave of players departed in the spring, including a handful of players that had joined as winter transfers or early enrollees. The group that ended up carrying the Mountaineers through the 2025 season wasn't exactly memorable, either, as the Mountaineers limped to a 4-8 record in Rodriguez's first season back at the helm in Morgantown.

Mountaineers rank Top 5 among portal departures

So maybe it shouldn't be a surprise that the Mountaineers have seen a large number of departures once again this offseason. Given the dismal effort last season, perhaps it is even a good thing for the program. But regardless of that face, the Mountaineers will be among the teams with the most portal entries once again this offseason.

According to On3, the Mountaineers have the fourth-most portal departures among all FBS teams, with 44 total players entering the portal – only Oklahoma State (64), Iowa State (54), and Penn State (46) have more. For what it's worth, our own portal tracker puts WVU at 52 departures, which would put them above Penn State on the list.
