WVU football has been on a recruiting tear during the Early Signing Period, and their efforts are now drawing some significant national attention.
The Mountaineers pulled off a massive haul on Wednesday and early on Thursday, and are now up a huge 47-person recruiting class that ranks 25th nationally according to the 247Sports Composite rankings – that marks the second-best class for the program since 2000, when such recruiting rankings first began being tracked, as well as the program’s top recruiting class since joining the Big 12 over a decade ago.
That type of effort was clearly not expected by national analysts, and they seemed a bit surprised by the Mountaineers coming out of nowhere to secure the third-best recruiting class in the Big 12 for the 2026 cycle. And at the end of the day, the impression among many was that West Virginia was a big winner on Wednesday.
That was the opinion of Rivals national recruiting reporter Greg Smith, who ranked his five big winners from the early signing day, and included the Mountaineers on his list.
“Coach Rich Rodriguez has had a good finish to the 2026 cycle. The biggest news came when the program flipped four-star safety Matt Sieg away from Penn State on National Signing Day. It’s not so much about Penn State as it is winning the battle against Virginia Tech and Indiana. Both schools made hard pushes for Sieg. Later in the day West Virginia flipped prized running back Amari Lattimer from Wisconsin,” Smith wrote.
“West Virginia also added some high upside pieces with JUCO offensive lineman Deshawn Woods and Indiana high schooler Jonas Muya. Also, 6-foot-4, 200 cornerback Da’Mun Allen joined the fold. West Virginia now has the No. 24 class in the country. The arrow is pointing up in Morgantown after National Signing Day.”
The Mountaineers kept the momentum going with a pair of commitments coming on Thursday after the aforementioned Rivals article was published with two more recruits that landed in the Top 20 of their class, according to 247Sports. Keep track of all WVU’s signings in the Class of 2026 at this link.
