The West Virginia Mountaineers capped a historic baseball series with a run to the College World Series, and once in Omaha, they advanced to the Final Four at the event – but eventually, they fell short of their ultimate goal of a national championship. However, WVU baseball fans are leaving Omaha with a championship win to their name.

On Monday, as the Oklahoma Sooners took home the College World Series crown and the event came to a close, it was time to tally up the final numbers in the infamous jello shot challenge that takes place each season at Rocco's, a well-known bar and restaurant in Omaha.

And while West Virginia fans didn't come close to the all-time record of 68,888 shots held by LSU in 2023, they did manage to party hard enough to handle business against the other seven fan bases that gathered in Omaha and to take home the jello shot title this season.

With just one game remaining and West Virginia fans (mostly) cleared out of Omaha, the Mountaineers were in first place with 28,208 jello shots consumed – that placed them over 15,000 shots ahead of Oklahoma's fans in a distant second place, and leaving little hope of a comeback for the opposition.

The victory came after some early controversy involving the bar and West Virginia fans, as ESPN analyst and WVU alum Pat McAfee arrived in town one day ahead of the College World Series looking to cut a large check to supply West Virginia fans with a large number of shots.

However, McAfee was blown off by a manager on duty, who implied his checks might bounce. He spotlighted the incident on The Pat McAfee Show the next day, and reportedly still left a massive tip despite the rocky start to the weekend.

Mountaineer Nation proves to be elite fan base in Omaha

West Virginia has long been known as a party school, and has always been a fan base with a massive amount of pride, and they came into the College World Series looking to demonstrate that with the national spotlight on the program.

Mountaineer Nation had already gone viral for their impressive crowds and post-game "Country Roads" tradition earlier in the postseason, and the fans are known to travel well. So it was no surprise that a large delegation of supporters turned out to Omaha for the College World Series, and they were expected to make some noise in the jello shot competition.

Now, while the Mountaineers came up just short on the diamond, the fans still made a statement during the event. That statement being that West Virginia fans are a loyal, passionate bunch that can rival any fan base in the country – both when it comes to supporting their program and holding their liquor.
