WVU baseball surges in Top 25 polls after earning first Big 12 series sweep this year

The Mountaineers are continuing to gain attention as they're off to another hot start in 2026, and a Top 25 series showdown now looms on the horizon for WVU.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are off another big start this season on the diamond, moving to 16-4 on the season this past weekend with their sixth series victory and first series sweep of the Big 12 season against the BYU Cougars.

The team's performance this weekend helped bring even more attention to a team growing more accustomed to the national spotlight after a pair of NCAA Super Regional appearances during the past two seasons, and on Monday, they climbed even higher in an assortment of national Top 25 polls.

In the D1Baseball poll, which is considered the official Division 1 Top 25 poll by the NCAA, the Mountaineers jumped to No. 17 this week, which is a three-spot climb from the last poll – making them the biggest gainer out of any team in this week's rankings.

The also climbed to No. 15 in another prominent Division 1 poll, the Baseball America Top 25. The Mountaineers also found themselves at No. 15 in the newest National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA).

A Top 25 showdown in Tempe awaits

Also finding their way into the polls this week is fellow Big 12 program Arizona State, who appeared at No. 22 in the latest D1Baseball rankings. The two teams are the only Big 12 representatives in the Top 25 this week.

The Sun Devils are set to welcome the Mountaineers to the desert this coming weekend for a three-game conference series. The opening pitch is set for 9:30 PM EST on Friday and Saturday, with an 8 PM EST start on Sunday.

Arizona State is 17-6 on the season and claimed series victories in their first two Big 12 series of the year against TCU and Kansas State, but were walloped by the Wildcats 12-1 in the final game on Sunday after picking up two wins to open the weekend.
