The West Virginia Mountaineers opened the weekend with back-to-back wins to capture their second conference series of the season, and during the first game of the series, WVU made some outstanding plays in the outfield to help seal the victory which impressed many – including their own pitcher.
Transfer outfielders Paul Schoenfeld and Brock Wills have been solid additions to West Virginia's starting lineup this season, and in the team's Coal Rush game against BYU on Friday, went viral for their incredible snags to secure a pair of outs. Wills would chase down an out that sent him face-first through an unlocked door into the bullpen, while Schoenfeld face-planted into the outfield wall to rob a potential home run from the Cougars.

Both plays would attract a significant amount of attention all over the college baseball world, with Schoenfeld's play ending up at No. 6 on Friday's SportsCenter Top 10 while Wills landed at No. 4. After the win, WVU starting pitcher Dawson Montesa was asked about his feelings on having outfielders that are willing to make those type of plays – his answer will put a smile on WVU fans' faces.
“It’s pretty cool to see a fly ball going there and know it's an automatic out," Montesa said.
The Mountaineers would end up securing a 7-4 win on Thursday against the Cougars, and would follow that up with a 12-10 victory on Saturday to secure the series win. The Mountaineers will clash with BYU once more on Saturday as they look to secure the series sweep.
I asked WVU pitcher Dawson Montesa what it was like to have an outfield that would literally run through a fence for him:
