The No. 25 WVU baseball team hit the road this weekend for it's second weekend series of the season against the Liberty Flames, and will be returning to Morgantown with a series victory but it's first loss of the year. And a lot of the 'good' in those victories came from a loaded transfer class that is proving it's worth quickly to West Virginia fans.
The Mountaineers got things off with a classic "Mazey Ball" 12-0 win on Friday night, which saw starting pitcher and Newberry College transfer Chansen Cole notch seven strikeouts and allow just two hits in 5.1 innings. Colorado Mesa transfer Paul Schoenfeld blasted a grand slam in the win, while Georgia Southern transfer Sean Smith added a home run of his own.
The Mountaineers also notched six stolen bases in Friday's win, and four of those came from transfers – one each from Schoenfeld and Smith, as well as from Ohio State transfer Matthew Graveline and UNC Wilington transfer Brock Wills.
In Saturday's win 2-0 wn the opening game of the double-header, Seton Hill transfer Ian Korn tossed three scoreless innings and added two strikeouts, while Schoenfeld and Smith each recorded doubles. Smith's double would in turn drive Schoenfeld home, recording WVU's only RBI in the victory.
Graveline and Wills, in addition to Ohio transfer Matt Ineich, would also all record at least one hit over the course of the weekend, while Hawaii transfer Joshua Surigao, Tennessee transfer Bryson Thacker, and Adelphi transfer Dawson Montesa all saw action on the mound – with Montesa starting the final game of the series, a 4-1 loss for WVU.
