WVU baseball drops from Top 25 poll after chaotic week

The West Virginia Mountaineers had a bit of a tough week, and found themselves falling out of the national rankings on Monday.

The West Virginia Mountaineers probably would have liked to have a bit better of a week.

Things got off to a sour start as a major headline emerged out of the program that stunned the college baseball world, as Preseason All-American and All-Big 12 selection Chase Meyer was dismissed from the team, with drama continuing to swirl around the situation all week.

Then things didn't get any better as they opened a weekend nonconference series against Columbia at Kendrick Family Ballpark in Morgantown with a loss to the Lions, who were an NCAA Tournaent team in 2025 but entered the series with just 1-5 on the season.

But the Mountaineers got things back on track on Saturday, emerging from a tight battle victorious after a walk-off grand slam from veteran infielder Brodie Kresser. And the Mountaineers would also secure a win on Sunday to earn the series victory.

But despite the strong finish to the weekend, two close game and an ugly loss to Columbia combined with the loss of a standout pitcher seems to have influenced the voters enough to drop WVU outside of the latest edition of the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings.

While where the Mountaineers sit in the rankings is relatively unimportant with two full months left to play in the regular season, it is another PR blow to a team that has taken a few over the past week. It appears without Meyer on the squad, and at least one loss in three consecutive weekend series, the Mountaineers will be working from behind to impress this season.
