The West Virginia Mountaineers have lost an unexpected piece of their 2026 pitching lineup quite early in the season.

Reports from EerSports on Tuesday which were later confirmed by other outlets confirmed that Chase Meyer is no longer apart of the WVU baseball program.

Chase Meyer no longer with the West Virginia Mountaineers

Meyer was in his third year with the Mountaineers, and led the program in wins on the mound last season. He was named an All-Big 12 preseason selection and preseason All-American ahead of the season, ad has been listed among the Top 100 prospects in the 2026 MLB Draft

WVU head coach Steve Sabins confirmed to EerSports that Meyer was "no longer with the program" but chose not to get into too much detail on the subject.

"I feel like it's my job to make sure we put 18- to 24-year-olds in a good position to be successful," Sabins told the outlet. "Talking about the details of someone's life and the decisions that have to be made, obviously, it's an unfortunate situation. In my position, I don't think I'll ever find it appropriate to go into detail, so we wish Chase Meyer the best. Obviously, he's a talented player who has a future ahead of him in baseball."

What spawned the move and whether it was a mutual decision or not is unknown, but the developments must have come recently, as Meyer has been on the diamond multiple times for WVU this season. Meyer was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA, five strikeouts, three walks and three hit batters with 3.1 innings pitched this season, and had yet to allow a hit over two appearances for the Mountaineers.

Last season Meyer made three starts and 22 appearances for WVU, and was 9-2 with a save and a 3.96 ERA. He pitched 48.0 innings with 63 strikeouts and 38 walks in 2025. The move adds further instability to a pitching lineup that has already seen JJ Glasscock undergo emergency surgery and Ben McDougal struggling with a flexor strain.
