The West Virginia Mountaineers suffered a tough loss to open the weekend on Friday against Columbia, and things were looking dicey in the second game of the series on Saturday as well.
The Lions kept up with the Mountaineers at the plate, and managed to have the game tied 5-5 at the end of the ninth to force extra innings. And just when fans might have been convinced something was wrong inside of the program, veteran infielder Brodie Kresser stepped up to the plate to save the game.
It was the bottom of the tenth, and WVU had loaded the bases with a combination of an infield single, hit by pitch, and a walk. And that's when Kresser, just 1-for-5 at the plate on the day, blasted a home run 367 feet over the left field wall to record a walk-off grand slam and even the series at 1-1.
The hit was the first home run of the season for Kresser, and the eighth of his WVU tenure, and the 22nd of his collegiate career. The play also marked the first walk-off home for a WVU player since Reed Chumley achieved the feat in 2024 against the UCF Knights.
The win helped the Mountaineers advance to 9-3 on the season, and keeps the Mountaineers in play to win their fourth series victory of the season. WVU and Columbia will meet at 12:30 PM EST on Sunday at Kendrick Family Ballpark in Morgantown in the third and final game of the series.
