The transfer portal is often described as the Wild West. One reason for that is that coaches are trying to get all of the best players that they can get hold of, despite how the roster might look. The hunt for talent precedes the look of the roster.

On July 19, Creed Erdos announced his commitment to WVU baseball. Erdos is a rising sophomore who will be taking his talents to Morgantown after one season with the James Madison Dukes. The right-handed hitting catcher will be adding one more name to the depth chart of catchers that the Mountaineers have for the 2026 season.

Officially, Logan Sauve will not be returning to play his senior season at WVU, as he signed his $304,000 contract with the Athletics. But even without Sauve, there is still a lot of depth on the roster at the catcher position for 2026. Players include returning rising sophomore utility player Gavin Kelly, McMurry transfer Michael Smosna, and Ohio State transfer Matthew Graveline.

Although Kelly saw innings behind the plate as a catcher in a backup role to Sauve, he also has a decent chance of being worked in at second base or even a corner outfield spot because of his athletic ability and flexibility that he offers.

Erdos saw very limited action for the JMU Dukes in his freshman season in 2024. Erdos only recorded 14 at-bats in eight games played, including five starts. In his 14 at-bats, Erdos had a .284 batting average with one double.

Ahead of Erdos on the JMU roster at the catcher position was Jack Cannizzaro, who tallied 43 games started, Jackson Tone, who tallied 24 starts, and J.P. Williams, who tallied 21 starts. Erdos had a lot of competition ahead of him at the catcher position, but even with three guys getting 24 or more starts, Erdos still managed to scrape five starts (eight games played) together in his freshman season.

One position that WVU will have a healthy competition for is the catching position. Kelly, Graveline, Smosna, and Erdos will all get looks, and Sabins can have plenty of choices on how to configure his lineup. WVU baseball fans should be happy with how the roster is starting to fill out.
