WVU baseball is continuing to build a pipeline for elite small college transfers to get an opportunity to showcase their skills at the Power 4 level.
After Division 2 talents in recent years such as pitcher Griffin Kirn and outfielder Kyle West became standout contributors after joining the Mountaineers, the WVU coaching staff has doubled down on seeking out big-time talents at smaller levels of the sport. This is the case for the Mounatineers' most recent addition at catcher.
WVU baseball added a commitment this past week from Michael Smosna, who joins the Mountaineers after beginning his career at McMurry (TX), which plays at the Division 3 level. Smosna was listed as the top catcher across Division 3 by 64Analytics, and earned 2025 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Player of the Year honors for his efforts this past season.
Smosna joins the Mountaineers after starting 45 games for the War Hawks this past season, posting a big-time batting average of.439 this past season, adding 58 RBIs, 18 doubles, 16 stolen bases, eight home runs and seven triples during the campaign. He helped lead McMurry to a 35-13 record and a Division 3 Super Regional appearance.
Smosna is the second catcher to join the Mountaineers through the transfer portal this offseason, with Southern Illinois standout John Lemm also committing to WVU. They join a transfer class filled with capable batters, including Ohio transfer Matt Ineich, Colorado-Mesa transfer Paul Schoenfeld, Georgia Southern transfer Sean Smith, and UNC Wilmington transfer Brock Wills.
