After taking two out of three games against Texas Tech, marking the sixth straight conference series win for West Virginia baseball, the Mountaineers continue to climb in the national rankings.
D1Baseball’s rankings are the official rankings recognized by the NCAA, making it the most important for WVU. On Monday, D1Baseball ranked WVU at 12th, the most recent ranking being the highest for the Mountaineers this season has been ranked so far this season. Jumping four spots from 16th in last week’s D1 Baseball rankings, the series win over Texas Tech was a huge reason for the bump in the rankings.

Even with the heartbreaking loss to in-state rival Marshall during the midweek game, the series win over the Red Raiders showed enough for D1 Baseball to move WVU up four spots in the latest rankings. After the WVU series, Texas Tech (17-28, 5-7 Big 12) has the highest strength of schedule in the country.
The 2025 Red Raiders have played some tough opponents all year, and for WVU to squeak out two wins against the Red Raiders more than likely had an influential impact on D1Baseball bringing WVU higher on their rankings list.
D1Baseball is not the only ranking site that is giving WVU some extra love after a .500 week. Perfect Game has been pretty consistent in ranking WVU higher in their polls than D1Baseball since the early weeks of the 2025 season. With their latest rankings, Perfect Game has WVU all the way up at the 7th-ranked spot on their list.
Some other sites have the Mountaineers high up as well, including Baseball America (ranked WVU at 9th), National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA has WVU ranked at 13th), and USA Today (has WVU ranked 18th).
The jump in spots in the latest rankings came as a surprise to some Mountaineer baseball fans. Many were surprised to see WVU move up four spots after a 2-2 week with a loss to the Sun Belt Conference's Marshall. Losing in the ninth inning of a close game probably did help WVU’s case a little bit, considering they had won the previous two matchups (one in Morgantown and one in Huntington).
Even with the loss to Marshall, WVU baseball fans were a little surprised to see WVU climb four spots. Many Mountaineer fans probably expected WVU to stick somewhere around that 16th-ranked spot.
Luckily, the Mountaineers have no remaining midweek games left. They play at Kansas State this coming weekend for a three-game conference series and then host Kansas at home for the final three games of both the regular season and their conference games. The series against Kansas will be an extremely pivotal series for WVU in determining final conference seeding for the Big 12 Tournament and the possibility of WVU hosting a regional tournament.
