The West Virginia Mountaineers traveled to face the No. 22 Houston Cougars in a Big 12 road trip on Saturday, and in the first half of the game, true freshman starting quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. and redshirt sophomore Cam Vaughn hooked up for a touchdown pass that showed why they are two players that head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff should work hard to keep on the roster entering next season.
Entering the game 2-6 overall and winless in Big 12 action, the Mountaineers knew from the jump that a win would be required to keep hopes for bowl game alive, and they played like it from the first whistle as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Houston responded by scoring to close the gap within seven points, and that is win Fox linked up with Vaughn for the big play to deliver the message that WVU came to play.
With just over 12 minutes left in the second quarter and the Mountaineers having the ball in scoring territory, Fox decided to take a deep shot at the endzone. As Vaughn got in front of the defensive back defending him and had an open lane to the endzone, Fox decided to let the ball fly to his outside receiver, an dropped a pass over the shoulder of the defender and right into Vaughn's hands. Or Vaughn's hand, rather, as Vaughn decided to add to the impressiveness of the throw by twisting his body and reeling the reception on one-handed to seal the touchdown.
