As West Virginia football has ended their spring practice sessions and begin to look ahead towards the 2025 season, it appears a quarterback battle is brewing in Morgantown.
The two most likely candidates right now are upperclassmen -- one who returns to the program after beginning his collegiate career under former WVU coach Neal Brown, and another who is the most highly-touted among a pair of transfer quarterbacks brought into the program by new coach Rich Rodriguez. The former option is redshirt junior Nicco Marchiol, and the latter option is Texas A&M transfer and redshirt senior Jaylen Henderson.
However, there could be another player in WVU's current quarterback room that makes waves for the Mountaineers -- if not this upcoming season, then soon in the future.
Josh Wolfe of West Virginia On SI reported today that sources in Morgantown have indicated to him that true freshman Scotty Fox Jr. -- who enrolled at West Virginia in January and saw significant action in the Gold-Blue Spring Showcase -- is a rising name to watch in WVU's quarterback room.
"Sources out of Morgantown have told me that Scotty Fox is a star in the making, and is considered to be the future of West Virginia," Wolfe wrote. "He is dealing with a minor injury right now, but do not be surprised if the true freshman is third on the depth chart this fall."
Fox was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2025 according to Rivals but a three-star prospect according to other recruiting services -- he finished his senior season at Mentor High School in Ohio completing 64% of his passes and tallying 2,759 passing yards and 34 passing touchdowns. He also used his legs to pick up 321 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns on the season.
