WVU football has to win out in the month of November if they want to make it back to the postseason for a third consecutive year, and is still winless in Big 12 play through five conference games. The matchup with Houston is the fifth away game on the 2025 slate for the Mountaineers, and the fourth in league play – WVU is also winless away from Morgantown this season, with losses to Ohio, Kansas, BYU, and UCF on the road. The West Virginia Mountaineers and Houston Cougars have only met once in the two program's histories, with the sole contest taking place in 2023 during Houston's first season in the Big 12. West Virginia is 0-1 against Houston as the Cougars, then coached by former WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen, defeated the Mountaineers 41-39 on a walk-off Hail Mary touchdown pass to win the game.
