Already having three former WVU football players on their roster -- all of who played together in Morgantown -- the Steelers have now signed another former Mountaineer defensive back.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced earlier this month on August 5 that they signed former Mountaineer, free agent DB Darly Porter Jr. Porter Jr. spent two seasons at WVU, but did not record any stats in his freshman season (2020). Porter Jr. transferred to Miami University (FL) to end his collegiate career, spending three seasons there.

During his sophomore season at WVU in 2021, Porter Jr. set a career high in tackles, passed defended. Porter Jr. recorded 46 tackles (40 solo tackles), six passes defended, and one interception.

Porter Jr. joins slew of former Mountaineers on Steelers roster

Porter Jr. will join familiar faces with Zach Frazier, Beanie Bishop, and Doug Nester all already on the Steelers roster. The trio of former WVU players that were on the roster before Porter Jr. were reunited with another former WVU player, Wyatt Milum, during a preseason game earlier this month.

Frazier, Nester, and Porter Jr. were all on the 2021 WVU football team. Finishing with a record of 6-7, the trio only played in one season together before Porter Jr. was off to Miami. Bishop Jr. had not yet transferred into the WVU program before Porter Jr. was playing for the Hurricanes.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Darly Porter Sr. was drafted in the sixth round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers but never played in a game for the Gold and Black. Porter Sr. had a five-year career, playing with the Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and the Buffalo Bills.

The Steelers now have four former WVU players on their roster. With only approximately 75 miles separating Morgantown and Pittsburgh, many WVU fans will probably be rooting for the Steelers because of both proximity and the number of former players on the Steelers’ roster.
