The development of true freshman quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. has been impressive over the last few games for the Mountaineers.

Coming into the WVU program after committing to the previous coaching staff (Neal Brown and his staff), Fox Jr. was not sure how much playing time he would get or how the new coach would utilize his skillset, whether that be in the 2025 season or beyond. Enter head coach Rich Rodriguez, and his noted history of utilizing dual-threat quarterbacks.

In his past two games as the starting quarterback, Fox Jr. is 41-for-63 (65 % completion percentage) with 458 passing yards (229 passing yards per game), three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Using his legs, Fox Jr. has added 51 yards on the ground and an additional two touchdowns with his legs. After Saturday’s game, Fox Jr. spoke about his effectiveness as a dual-threat quarterback and how he trusts his abilities as a dual-threat quarterback.

“I really see myself as a dual-threat quarterback…and Coach Rod really likes to run his quarterbacks,” Fox Jr. commented.

After each start, Fox Jr. seems like he is finding a groove in his role in Coach Rodriguez’s offense. Each additional start that the true freshman makes brings him a higher comfort level using his ability as a dual threat.

Coming out of high school, the Mentor, Ohio, native was a three-star recruit, ranked as the 51st quarterback in the class of 2025 and the 40th-ranked recruit in the state of Ohio for the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.

With three games left on the schedule, many fans would like to see Coach Rodriguez stick with the true freshman quarterback for the rest of the season, regardless of the health status of quarterback Khalil Wilkins, to keep him in rhythm as a starting quarterback and see if he can live up to previous hype as the rumored "future" of WVU football.
