Notable ESPN college basketball insider and former collegiate head coach Fran Fraschilla has posted a number of thoughts on Twitter/X in recent months about the West Virginia men’s basketball program. Most prominently, Fraschilla made his thoughts known on WVU getting snubbed by being left out of the NCAA Tournament.
Now with WVU's Head Coach Darian DeVries officially off to Bloomington to take the opening with Indiana basketball, the Mountaineers will begin yet another coaching search. And Fraschilla has chimed in on this search as well.
"If you have not been to the state of West Virginia, trust me, [WVU basketball] is a sleeping giant. They will get a great coach," Fraschilla tweeted just hours before the move was made official.

Fraschilla also recently boosted WVU as a job opening compared to another rumored landing spot for DeVries -- the Iowa Hawkeyes. This could be important as their search is still ongoing and the Mountaineers might be looking at some of the same targets.
What is also true is that Fraschilla is rightly justified in his stance that West Virginia will be able to land a solid head coach, should DeVries leave. West Virginia Athletic Director Wren Baker has done a tremendous job during his tenure in Morgantown, and his managing the basketball program has been no exception to this.
After handling the Bob Huggins fiasco with great class and stability, Baker did not rush into an immediate decision but rather had Josh Eilert serve as an interim head coach for the 2023-24 season. In March of 2024, Wren Baker “got his guy” when it was announced that Darian DeVries was coming to Morgantown to serve as the program’s next men’s basketball head coach.
It is safe to say that both Wren Baker and fans of the program are happy with how that hire panned out and you’d be hard-pressed to find a Mountaineer fan that is happy DeVries will soon be leaving. But fans should have great trust in Wren Baker to land another great hire and put their best foot forward when it comes to the men’s basketball program.
