Week one of the NFL preseason has concluded. The NFL preseason is a great opportunity for undrafted free agents and late round draft picks to standout trying to earn a roster spot on the 53-man roster. One of those undrafted free agents is a former Mountaineer quarterback that turned wide receiver in his journey to make an NFL roster.
Garrett Greene was the starting quarterback for WVU for two full seasons from 2023-2024 after taking over the role late in the 2022 season – however, he is now catching passes in the NFL preseason. The former quarterback signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a wide receiver this offseason, and caught two passes for 22 yards in the team's 29-7 win over the Tennessee Titans in the first week of NFL preseason action while also adding a 17-yard punt return. Greene’s performance was enough to get the attention of the head coach Todd Bowles.
“He’s very fast, very quick, very tough, and he has very good hands. He’s a guy that’s growing every day and can some things that we really like,” Bowles said about the former WVU starting quarterback.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' depth chart at the wide receiver position is one of the best depth charts in all of the NFL. Including veterans and great playmakers Mike Evans and Chris Goodwin at the top of the chart, the amount of talent in the position group does not stop there. Other receivers include 2025 NFL Draft 19th overall pick Emeka Egbuka, 2025 NFL Draft 7th round-pick Tez Johnson, and more.
Earlier this week, Greene earned some buzz around his training camp performance after a Tampa Bay news site Pewter Report posted clips of Greene making some great catches. Carrying over his catches from practice to the Buccaneer’s preseason game, Greene is making some noise to be squeeze into the 53-man roster for the start of the regular season. At the very least, if Greene keeps up his play on the field, he should earn a chance to be included on the practice squad.
WVU fans hope to see the quarterback turned wide receiver make an NFL roster soon. Greene offers some quickness, good hands, and an ability to absorb some hits. Hopefully we see Greene catching passes from a starting NFL quarterback this season.
