Since being drafted in the late stages of the 2025 MLB Draft, one former WVU outfielder is continuing to string together good at-bats as he gets more comfortable playing professional baseball.

Skylar King, a former WVU outfielder from 2023-2025, put together his best game yet at the minor league level after being drafted earlier this summer by the Boston Red Sox in the 2025 MLB Draft. On August 20, King went 2-3 with a walk, two triples, and an RBI for the Salem Red Sox. The Columbia, South Carolina, native is starting to get his feet under him as he continues to grow in his young minor league career.

Through his first 70 at-bats in professional baseball, King is posting a .271/.370/.386 slash line with four RBIs and five stolen bases. King has continued to get better as his season at Single-A has progressed.

The stats for the former WVU outfielder have not always been the most eye-popping on paper. But he has continued to string together good at-bats and continued to hit as the season has stretched on.

Making flashy, spectacular plays in the outfield was King’s calling card in college and has been once more at the beginning of his minor league career. Defense and speed are something that can carry prospects up the ranks, as it does not slump against tougher competition like hitting tools do for young players. As an example, another former Mountaineer outfielder, Victor Scott II, has having an unbelievable season defensively before landing on the injured list.

During his three seasons at WVU, King posted a .274/.375/.394 across 134 games (2023-2025). King also racked up eight home runs, 61 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases. His defense and speed were almost always constant for the Mountaineers as he roamed the outfield.

As his first minor league season winds down, King is trying to make his name known as someone who can be a constant supply of production in the offense and someone who can bring elite-level speed and defense to any lineup.
