The 2025 season has been a season that former West Virginia Mountaineer Victor Scott II will remember for the rest of his life.

To very little surprise, former the WVU baseball outfielder has been named as a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, representing the St. Louis Cardinals. The starting centerfielder has made an excellent case for why he deserves the honor of being a finalist.

Looking up the former WVU outfielder’s Baseball Savant page, his defensive numbers and metrics are dazzling. With a fielding run value of 12, Scott II ranks in the 96th percentile of all the major leagues. Posting 17 outs above average, Scott II lands in the 99th percentile of MLB. Yes, you read that correctly, Scott II has an outs above average better than 99% of the MLB. Lastly, with an 87 mph average throw, Scott II comes in the 69th percentile.

Going back to his 17 outs above average, which ranks him better than 99 percent of the MLB, there are only six players who have more outs above average, and two players are tied with Scott II. Here is where the bad news comes into play: the major league leaders in all of baseball in outs above average is the Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong. Crow Armstrong, also known commonly as PCA, was announced as a Gold Glove finalist in centerfield. Along with Crow-Armstrong, Washington Nationals’ Jacob Young is the final finalist for the centerfield position.

It will be an uphill battle for Scott II to take home the award, even though he has made highlight play after highlight play. Both Crow-Armstrong and Young are ahead of Scott II in defensive runs saved, with 15 and 13, respectively. Scott II has recorded 12 defensive runs saved according to .

It would be an outstanding day for WVU baseball if Scott II takes home the award, but it is still a great accomplishment for the program to have an alumnus named as a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
