If you feel like you are hearing the news that Victor Scott II has made another great play for the second or third time in the past couple of weeks, you are not wrong -- the former West Virginia baseball standout continues to make numerous web gem plays this season for the St. Louis Cardinals
This time, Scott spoiled the MLB debut of Jac Caglianone of the Kansas City Royals -- as Caglianone smacked what would've been his first MLB hit, Scott II went racing back towards the centerfield wall. He reached up and made a full extension on the run and secured a jumping catch just before crashing into the padding of the centerfield wall, taking away what would have been a special moment in Caglianone’s debut.
Just a little under a month ago, Scott II robbed a hit from superstar and highest-paid player of all time Juan Soto. Now it was young Caglianone’s turn to fall victim to a spectacular play in the outfield. Soto and Caglianone both joined the growing list of hitters who have seen a base hit, and several hitters who have seen an extra base hit, taken away from their stats because of a fantastic play made by the former Mountaineer.
If you land on the former Mountaineer’s Baseball Savant page, his fielding and baserunning numbers are blood red, meaning he is highly ranked in the top percentile of the MLB in those categories. That starts with Scott II’s sprint speed -- 30.1 feet per second -- which lands him in the top percentile of the league.
Yes, you read that correctly, the former WVU centerfielder is leading the MLB in sprint speed. Using that blazing speed, Scott II sits at 8 Outs Above Average (OAA) so far in the 2025 MLB season, which lands him in the 99th percentile in the MLB. His 8 OAA number is good for seventh overall in the major leagues, third among outfielders, and third highest in all of the National League.
His speed and range are not the only categories that are red on his Baseball Savant page. Posting an 87.3 mph average throw velocity, Scott II ranks in the 72nd percentile.
