The West Virginia Mountaineers brought several transfer portal pieces into the fold this offseason, but perhaps the splashiest name they landed in the portal was running back Cam Cook. Last season, Cook established himself as the leading rusher at the FBS level at Jacksonville State, and previously earned Big 12 experience at TCU. Now, he'll once again have his shot at the Power 5 level.
Last season, the Mountaineers lost starting tailback Jahiem White for the season due to an injury in Week 2, and then lost their short-yardage back and second-string option Tye Edwards for the year due to an injury during his 141-yard, three touchdown performance in the win over Pitt in Week 3. Combined with a lackluster offensive line performance, this stifled head coach Rich Rodriguez's typically lethal run offense.
To address that run game, Cook was brought into the program with the intention that he will inherit the starting role and take on a hefty load for the Mountaineers this fall. And with the player ratings for the EA Sports College Football 27 now out, the expectations might be even higher than before.
WVU football RB ranked as Top 10 player at his position in College Football 27 video game
Cam Cook seems to have attracted the attention of those developing the newest college football video game, as he is rated as the eight-best running back in the game with a 91 overall. That makes him the second-best tailback in the Big 12 in the game, just behind L.J. Martin at BYU. That rating also ties him for the 52nd-highest rated player in the entire game.

If Cook can live up to that rating, Rodriguez could have a very dangerous run offense this season. The Mountaineers invested heavily in the offensive line, and it's hard to imagine a baseline that's worse than 2025's performance given the talent that's on the roster. They also have reunited Rodriguez with his former offensive line coach Rick Trickett, who was alongside him during his most successful stints with the Mountaineers in the 2000's, and at Jacksonville State in the 2020's.
With an vastly improved group paving the way in the trenches, Cook could have quite the special season if he's truly among the top ten running back talents in the sport – perhaps even a Doak Walker Award, All-American caliber performance. And if that's the case, WVU fans can expect things to look drastically different on offense this year.
