The West Virginia Mountaineers are hard at work on multiple fronts trying to put together their roster for the 2026-2027 season. They're still looking at adding high school recruits to bolster an already impressive class highlighted by five-star guard Miles Sadler, just retained a key rotational piece from last season in Amir Jenkins, and have secured multiple former Power 5 starters in the portal.

But WVU's activity in the portal has quieted over the past week, and they will need to make more additions to the roster. And they've got more than one Power 5 starter on their radar still, with the latest target coming due to ties with the current staff.

Ross Hodge looks to land St. John's transfer Joson Sanon

The Mountaineers are in pursuit of St. John's guard Joson Sanon, who has heard from multiple prominent power conference teams.

Sanon appeared in every game and made 14 starts for the Red Storm last season, averaging 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 20.9 minutes per game. Sanon has a connection to WVU assistant Yusuf Ali, who he played for at Arizona State as a true freshman. During that season in the Big 12, he averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest.

He also brings crucial postseason experience, which head coach Ross Hodge has stated previously is important to him when looking for talent in the portal. He helped the Red Storm capture the Big East Tournament Championship and advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament this past year.
