What makes it so historic? Well, with the win, the Mountaineers are just one victory away from the College World Series for the first time in 71 years. The last time West Virginia got quite this close to the College World Series was 1955 – but they would fall to eventual national champion Wake Forest before making it to the big event.
West Virginia Mountaineers on cusp of first College World Series in program history
Now, the Mountaineers have a prime opportunity to advance to the biggest stage in college baseball for the first time in program history. And even if they drope Game 2 to Cal Poly on Saturday, they will have a second opportunity on Sunday to secure the one win they need.
If the Mountaineers make the College World Series, it is the equivalent to the College Football Playoff or the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament – and it will be the furthest a West Virginia team has advanced since the men's basketball Final Four run in 2010.
The Mountaineers will play the Mustangs at Noon EST on Saturday, and there will certainly be another massive crowd in attendance, just like on Friday afternoon – a crowd that Steve Sabins offered high praise for. And if the fans are lucky, they may get to witness history being made at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
