The West Virginia Mountaineers landed a major steal in the portal on Monday as they signed Butler transfer Finley Bizjack.
It's a massive move for head coach Ross Hodge, and helps significantly shore up his rotation entering next season – Bizjack averaged 17.1 points per game last season for the Bulldogs, earning third team All-Big East honors for his efforts. But even more so, it shows that the Mountaineers are ready to flex their muscle in the transfer portal this offseason.
Ross Hodge signals aggressive transfer portal by strategy in signing 4-star transfer from Power 5 level
Bizjack likely won't be the go-to scorer for WVU next year, but he will certainly be more than sufficient as a second or third option, especially with five-star signee Miles Sadler looming large for the Mountaineers. But while he might not be the main star of the show next season, landing him puts the rest of college basketball on notice that Hodge isn't playing around this offseason.
Many WVU fans have expressed desire across several sports, including men's basketball, to see more commitments from power conference competition in the transfer portal. And Butler is in the Big East, which is still considered among the top power conferences in college basketball.
And he's not just some role player, either. He brings starting experience at the level, and has been quite impressive throughout his career – he enters the portal as a four-star transfer prospect and one of the Top 10 combo guards in the nation.
You have to put in some effort and shell out some money for targets like that, and with other big names still on the board and a number of them connected to WVU, the commitment to landing a player like Bizjack early could signal more big-time moves are coming for WVU basketball.
