The West Virginia Mountaineers have lost yet another running back for the remainder of the 2025 season.
According to head coach Rich Rodriguez during pre-game coverage on the Mountaineer Sports Network, WVU football running back Tye Edwards has found an unfortunate answer to his injury issues. Edwards has played just once and earned just two snaps since exploding onto the scene in his first game with West Virginia with a 141-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Backyard Brawl to help secure a big rivalry win. After meeting with a specialist earlier this week, Edwards has discovered he needs surgery to deal with his hip pointer injury and will be done for the rest of the year.

Edwards is in his final season of eligibility, but has also played in few enough games to potentially earn a medical redshirt. Whether he wants to go through the process of fighting to get it after an eligibility battle with the NCAA that was taken to court this summer is uncertain, and even if he does, there's no guarantee he'd return to WVU to finish his eligibility.
But regardless of whether he gets to suit up in a WVU uniform again, Edwards will go down as a program legend for his incredible performance against the Pitt Panthers in a massive rivalry victory that the program needed during Rich Rodriguez's first season back in Morgantown. That is something Mountaineer fans will always be grateful for, and Edwards will always have his place in WVU and Backyard Brawl lore. Now, fans will hope to see him get healthy and potentially explore an avenue for a return to the program.
