Starting the season 4-0, the WVU basketball team is rolling with some serious momentum going into mid-November.
The Mountaineers continued to keep their undefeated season on track with a dominant 71-49 win over Pitt in The Backyard Brawl. According to Gold and Blue Zone on X, first-year head coach Ross Hodges has accomplished something no other first-year coach has done in Morgantown since the 1954-1955 season. Hodge is the first basketball coach at WVU to start his inaugural season 4-0 since Fred Schaus managed the accomplishment in that 54’-55’ season with the help of WVU basketball legend Hot Rod Hundley. Since then, nine head coaches have failed to win the first four games in their tenures in Morgantown.

Coming off four straight wins over Mount St. Mary’s, Campbell, Leigh, and Thursday night’s large victory over rival Pittsburgh. WVU is outscoring opponents 283-to-215.
Returning after being the top three-point shooter in Division I basketball last season, guard Honor Huff has been the offensive threat WVU fans hoped to get. Averaging 15.5 points per game in the first four games of the 2025-2026 season, Huff is also shooting 30.6% from the three-point line while adding 2.2 rebounds per game. 6-foot-9 senior forward Brenen Lorient has been another big bright spot for WVU. Averaging the second-most points per game at 13.8 points, Lorient is a great rebounder and defender as well. With nine blocks in four games, along with adding eight rebounds per game, Lorient fills up the stat sheet every night.
The Mountaineers might get even better soon, as they are still missing two pieces in the rotation with forward Jackson Fields and guard Chance Moore yet to record a minute played, dealing with some injuries. Starting 4-0 without your complete rotation (an unfortunate common occurrence for WVU basketball in recent years) leads to a lot of optimism for the Mountaineer squad.
Off to a historic start, the level of competition continues to climb with the ongoing schedule. Playing Lafayette on Monday, WVU opponents start to become tougher in the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic, facing off against Clemson and Georgia, or Xavier, depending on the results of the Charleston Classic games starting on November 21.
