A pair of former WVU basketball stars got off to a strong start in the NBA Summer League on Saturday.
The Mountaineers are currently being represented in summer league action by Erik Stevenson and Javon Small -- Stevenson suited up for WVU during the 2022-2023 season, while Small played this past season for the old-gold-and-blue and was recently selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft.
Stevenson recently signed with the Miami Heat for their summer league roster, which often serves as an audition for a more permanent role with the organization, after he spent last year playing with the Washington Wizards and their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go. His first game with the Heat was a big one -- he came off the bench and exploded for 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists to help Miami earn a win over the San Antonio Spurs. He finished as the second-leading scorer for the Heat.

Small, meanwhile, made his NBA Summer League debut as the Memphis Grizzlies faced Oklahoma City -- the defending NBA Finals champion -- and came away with a 92-80 win. Small didn't have quite the scoring effort that Stevenson managed, only chipping in four points for his team, but he managed to lead the Grizzlies with six assists in the victory.
Stevenson and the Heat will take the court again as they face the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, July 6 at 4:30 PM EST. Small will be back in action with the Grizzlies as they battle the Utah Jazz on Monday, July 7 at 9 PM EST. Both teams will finish their current round-robin tournaments on July 8 before moving onto the Las Vegas Summer League, set to take place from July 10-July 20.
