The West Virginia Mountaineers are preparing to host an NCAA Regional this week as they begin what they hope wil be a path to Omaha and the College World Series. But two athletes who have seen little playing time this year will be entering the transfer portal and beginning their search for new homes as the rest of the team gears up for the postseason.
It was reported on Wednesday by James Gravley of WV Sports Chat that two West Virginia pitchers are planning to enter the portal in Luke Lyman and Bryson Thacker.
Luke Lyman, Bryson Thacker set to transfer from West Virginia baseball
Lyman has been with the Mountaineers for the past three seasons after transferring in from Morehead State following the 2023 season. He will have one season of eligibility remaining. Over the course of his three-season stint with the Mountaineers, he made 16 appearances on the mound.

In 2024, Lyman pitched 6.1 innings and recorded six strikeouts and an ERA of 4.26. He followed that up last season with 11 strikeouts in eight innings pitched, going 1-1 on the mound with an ERA of 9.00. He would earn his sole win on the mound for the Mountaineers against Ohio. He did not make any appearances this season for West Virginia.
Also set to enter the portal is Bryson Thacker, who joined the Mountaineers last offseason as a transfer from Tennessee. Thacker pitched just 10 innings for the Mountaineers this season, recording 13 strikeouts but allowing nine hits, 10 walks, and 11 runs. Prior to WVU, he pitched 4.1 innings in 2025 for the Volunteers, recording seven strikeouts. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
I am being told that Bryson Thacker, who transferred to #WVU from Tennessee, will be entering the portal.
