While there were moments during the 2025 season where the bats slowed down for WVU baseball, the team's abilities at the plate was the clear strong point for the Mountaineers during a historic run that ended in an NCAA Super Regional loss. And as head coach Steve Sabins looks to add to his roster in the transfer portal, he seems intent on restocking his lineup with more big hitters.

The most recent addition for Sabins fits that mold, as WVU baseball earned a commitment from Georgia Southern outfielder Sean Smith. Initially announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) by baseball outlet On The Clock, the move adds yet another talented bat to an already loaded transfer portal class -- Smith ranked third in the Sun Belt in batting average (.352) and fifth in slugging percentage (.599).

Smith saw action in 48 games for the Eagles this past season, starting 45 of those contests at both left field and as a designated hitter -- in addition to his batting average and slugging percentage, he managed a .458 on-base percentage and recorded 57 hits, 36 RBIs, nine doubles, nine home runs, and two triples at the plate.

Out of high school, Smith was ranked the tenth-best first baseman in the nation and the eighth-best overall player from the state of Mississippi. He joins a class of talented transfer batters entering the program including Ohio's Matt Ineich, Southern Illinois' John Lemm, Colorado-Mesa's Paul Schoenfeld, and UNC Wilmington's Brock Wills. Smith will have one season of eligibility remaining.
