Just like some other former West Virginia Mountaineers trying to shore up roster spots or key roles on their team, the NFL preseason is a chance for backup quarterbacks to earn second and third string roles on an NFL roster.
During the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-21 loss to the Los Angles Rams, one former WVU quarterback added a rushing touchdown in a game that the Cowboys struggled to score in. Will Grier scampered in for an eight-yard touchdown run to give the Cowboys their final score of the contest late in the fourth quarter. Grier finished with 2 rushes for 12 yards including the touchdown run, and passing he had only three attempts, completing two of them for 14 passing yards.

After transferring in from Florida where he played two seasons, Grier gifted a lot of great memories to WVU football fans in his two seasons wearing old gold and blue in 2017-2018. The two that more than likely pop out the most are the touchdown pass to Greg Jennings with 16 seconds left in the game to tie the game against Texas, and his two-point conversion run afterwards that ultimately won the game.
Grier is competing with Joe Milton III for the second-string quarterback position behind Dak Prescott. Milton III went 17/29 with one touchdown and one interception. Milton III is widely projected to win the second-string quarterback job.
In his latest preseason game, Grier gets praise from popular sports media personality
Even though Grier did not get much playing time in the Cowboys first preseason game on Saturday, he did impress a certain popular sports media personality who is a Cowboys fan. Skip Bayless, widely known for his arguments with Stephen A Smith on ESPN’s First Take, was advocating for Grier to get an opportunity to become a backup quarterback somewhere in the NFL and hopes he gets that chance. Bayless also shouted out Grier and the Mountaineers saying he’s been a fan of Grier since his WVU days.
I've liked Will Grier since he was lighting it up at West Virginia. Hope he gets a shot, somehow somewhere - obviously a long shot.

During his two seasons repping the Mountaineers, Grier threw for 7354 passing yards with 71 touchdown passes and only had 20 interceptions to his 71 touchdowns. He averaged 334 passing yards per game over his 22 games played in two years.
WVU football fans are hopeful that Grier finds his way onto a team that he can compete for the second-string QB job. Grier has proven that he would make a fine backup in the NFL.
