The West Virginia Mountaineers have had their backs against the wall since Saturday night, but they don't seem to understand the meaning of the word quit.
They didn't quit when they had to battle No. 2 seed Wake Forest in an elimination game Sunday afternoon, which they won 10-5. They didn't quit when they got off to a hot start against Kentucky in the second game of the day, with their season still on the line. And when Kentucky stormed back to take a 7-6 lead and senior Ben McDougal was called upon to keep the Mountaineers alive to play another day, he certainly didn't quit either
Bridgeport native makes save for WVU baseball in Morgantown Regional win
McDougal hails from Bridgeport, West Virginia, which is just a over a half-hour south of Morgantown. He began his career at JUCO Potomac State before joining the Mountaineers last season, where he made 19 appearance in relief for West Virginia and earned a 1-1 record. He had been called upon sparingly this season, making just eight appearances before Sunday night. He has played in just three games in May, and only two before the NCAA Regional.
But McDougal lived up to the pressure, as he often has in his limited action this year. He went five innings for the Mountaineers, recording six strikeouts and allowing just three hits. He wasn't perfect, with two of his hits yielded going for home runs to extend Kentucky's lead to 9-6. But it was enough to allow West Virginia the room to pull back ahead with a five-run ninth inning to force a final game in the Morgantown Regional.
