West Virginia baseball secured a Big 12 series sweep on Sunday against the Houston Cougars on Sunday, and the good news for the WVU program has kept rolling in since. Below, we take a look at some of this week's top stories surrounding WVU baseball.

West Virginia (finally) cracks the Top 25

Many WVU baseball fans have been upset as of late with not being ranked by D1 Baseball (who provides the official NCAA Baseball rankings) after a 13-win streak to begin the 2025 season and early success in Big 12 play has garnered one of the best overall records in the sport.

But what was a good way to encourage D1 Baseball to rank WVU? Winning eight straight conference games in a row, along with an overall 10-game winning streak. And that is exactly what WVU did in recent weeks, and sweeping the Cougars in Houston helped push WVU over the hump to get them ranked at 24th by D1 Baseball in this week's rankings.

Logan Sauve recognized for elite play

WVU earned recognition as a team in the Top 25 poll, but Mountaineer Logan Sauve got some individual praise this week as well.

Sauve was awarded the Big 12 Player of the Week for his fantastic performance during the Houston series. A preseason All-Big 12 selection at catcher, Sauve hit for a .556 batting average with two home runs during the weekend series. WVU’s backstop is a vital piece of this lineup that likes to put up a lot of runs.

JJ Wetherholt excels professionally

One of the greatest Mountaineer baseball players in program history, JJ Wetherholt, is starting to find his stride in Double-A to begin the 2025 season.

Wetherholt played 29 games last season in Single-A after getting drafted seventh overall in the 2024 MLB draft. During his 29 games, Wetherholt’s slash line read .295/.405/.400 (Batting average/On-base percentage/ Slugging percentage) with two home runs, 20 RBIs, and 16 walks drawn.

Although it is a small sample size, given that Wetherholt has only played eight games so far, he has duplicated his offensive numbers from his first season in professional baseball. His slash line this season reads .313/.410/.375. In only eight games, Wetherholt has driven in four runs. Before the 2025 season, Wetherholt was MLB’s 23rd-ranked prospect and the Cardinals’ #1 ranked prospect, according to MLB.

This week has been a great week for the WVU baseball program. Team recognition in the Top 25, Sauve being Big 12 Player of the Week, and alumni tearing it up in the minor leagues has made for an exciting time around the program, and WVU carried this momentum to claim the second game of the season against in-state rival Marshall on Tuesday with a final score of 5-4 in Huntington. Now the Mountaineers will return home for a weekend series against Big 12 rival Cincinnati, which will open on Thursday evening.
