The West Virginia Mountaineershad the best season in program historyin 2026, capped by a run to the College World Series. Now, with several players returning and momentum on their side, the Mountaineers are hoping to establish themselves as a yearly contender for a trip to Omaha.

But so much of how you postseason plays out can be based on what your schedule looks like, and you always want things to shake out in favor of your team. On Thursday, the Big 12 schedule wasreleased for the upcoming season, and there are a few things about the schedule for the program to be happy about.

WVU baseball draws toughest conference games at Kendrick Family Ballpark

There's no place like home, which is lesson the Mountaineers learned well from theraucous home crowdthat turned out to support them during the NCAA Tournament this past year, when the Regional and Super Regional rounds were both played in Morgtantown.

And now, homefield advantage looks like it could play a role in West Virginia's favor in how the battle between the top teams in the league shakes out next season. The three most likely candidates right now to win the league next season are Arizona State, Kansas, and WVU – and it just so happens that the Mountaineers will play their series against both teams next year at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

You'd prefer to dodge at least one of these top teams in regular season play if you could, but it does give the Mountaineers to establish themselves as the outright top team in the Big 12 by season's end. And to get the privilege of facing both of those teams in a series at home, especially with a crowd behind you like West Virginia's, is a major boon.

But while WVU does get both teams at home, which should increase their odds, the one piece of bad luck comes in the fact that both these games are set to be played early in the conference schedule, when the Mountaineers are still re-adjusting to the grind of Power 5 baseball. But despite that, Steve Sabins and his team have to be optimistic drawing their toughest opponents at home.
