With the 2025 college football season just a few months away, anticipation is high for West Virginia fans. How the team will perform will come down to a multitude of factors, an important one being the performance of the program's quarterbacks. Recently, WVU's quarterback group was ranked alongside every other FBS program, and they were listed on the same tier as a very familiar opponent that they will face off against this fall.

Last Monday, ESPN’s David Hale released his tier list of college quarterbacks. In the 11th tier -- out of 20 in total -- Hale has Nicco Marchiol, Jaylen Henderson and Max Brown. In addition to Marchiol and company, Pitt’s Eli Holstein, David Lynch, and Cole Gonzales also found themselves in the 11th tier, named, which Hale labeled “room for improvement.”

Since Garrett Greene graduated, Marchiol has the opportunity to become the full-time starter for the first time in his career. Playing in eight games last season, with two starts in relief of an injured Greene, Marchiol threw for 754 yards and five touchdowns, along with a 66% completion percentage.

Many WVU fans are anxiously awaiting to see what Marchiol can do in Rich Rodriguez’s offense. The former three-star prospect according to , hails from Chandler, Arizona, was a valuable high school prospect in the class of 2022. Since then, he has been serving as backup for Greene with some spot starts in Greene’s absence. During his spot starts, he played well enough, but not outstanding.

If Marchiol wins the job, it will not be without competition. Coach Rodriguez bringing in Henderson and Brown will ensure that the best man will win the starting quarterback job. With that increased level of talent in the battle, whoever emerges as the starter will benefit from the increase in talent that Coach Rodriguez brought into the room.
