A former Mountaineer is having a great start to his second year in Major League Baseball. Most known for his speed and defensive abilities, the former WVU baseball player is proving he can swing the bat as well.
Victor Scott II is really starting to emerge as a defensive extraordinaire in the outfield for the St. Louis Cardinals, but Scott II can remind people that he can swing the wood, too. Scott II had a clutch three-run home run against the Cincinnati Reds. Scott II’s blast helped the Cardinals to a commanding lead in their 6-0 win over the Reds.

The ninth inning began with the Cardinals holding onto a 1-0 lead over the Reds. Later in the inning, with two outs and two runners on, Scott II sent a ball into the left centerfield bleachers. Scott II’s long ball extended the lead to 4-0 for St. Louis. That is all they would need, even though they did add two more insurance runs in the ninth.
Scott II is proving he can be more than just a tremendous defender
Scott II is posting remarkable numbers and metrics on the defensive side of the ball. His defense and blazing speed are a big reason the Cardinals have trusted him with the duties of the starting centerfielder. His production does not stop in the field; it has extended into the batter's box.
In 29 games played so far this season, Scott II is sporting a .273/.336/.404 slash line with a .740 OPS. His production numbers are also very solid with two home runs, 14 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. The combination of speed, defense, and all hitting ability has shone for Scott II in his 29 games played.
All of these numbers have drastically increased from last season for Scott II. The Cardinals are getting more than they originally planned. Scott II’s level of production is a welcome sight for Cardinals fans, and Mountaineer fans have to love seeing a former WVU player having success in the major leagues.
