The West Virginia Mountaineers are back to their winning ways, putting a definitive end to a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a walk-off field goal against Cincinnati to secure a 45-42 Homecoming win.
Now, the Mountaineers will hit the road in Week 8 for their final game before their bye week this season, where they'll travel to TCU for a showdown with the Horned Frogs. The opening betting odds have been released for that game, and despite West Virginia getting back in the in column yesterday, the Vegas oddsmakers don't expect that to continue next week.
West Virginia opens as underdogs against TCU
The Mountaineers will enter this coming week as 6.5-point underdogs against the Horned Frogs. The over/under, meanwhile, is set at 58 points.
One could debate whether the Mountaineers are being underestimated here, as they enter with four wins as opposed to TCU's three wins. But both teams are coming off victories, and TCU will be on their home field. And despite how the season has played out in Fort Worth, plenty of folks entered th year with the beleif that TCU has a more talented roster than the Mountaineers.
The game actually should be an intriguing match-up. West Virginia has had one of the best offenses in the country this year – mostly due to their rushing attack, but on Saturday, the pass game shined as Cincinnati found a way to slow the Mountaineers on the ground. Meanwhile, TCU is allowing just 11 points per contest to opposing teams through six games.
Meanwhile, West Virginia's defense is allowing well over 30 points per game this season. TCU's offense has scored just 24 points per game, meanwhile, and if you eliminate their FCS and Group of 6 opponents, that number drops drastically to 12.5 points per game against their four Big 12 opponents.
So whether the oddsmakers are correct or not will likely come down to how well West Virginia's explosive offense can respond to one of the best defenses they'll face all season, and how well TCU's typically lackluster offense will respond against one of the worst defenses they'll face all year.
