WVU football saw its postseason hopes crash and burn after a 25-23 loss to Arizona State on Saturday in a thrilling, back-and-forth battle that came down to the final possessions of the day. But despite the loss, there were still some plays from the Mountaineers that made fans turn their heads. Here are our top plays for West Virginia football from the loss against the Sun Devils.

1. Scotty Fox's 90-yard touchdown pass to Cyncir Bowers

This is the one that almost won the game, if it wasn't for the Sun Devils converting a pesky field goal on the next drive to re-take the lead. After being down at one point 22-10, the Mountaineers were within five points and looking to complete a comeback, but time was running out.

There was just under seven minutes to play, and a rough start to a drive had the Mountaineers facing a 3rd & 27 from their own 10-yard line. The TNT commentary team had just finished saying that there's "nothing in the playbook" for such an unfortunate situation when Scotty Fox Jr. tossed a simple swing pass to running back Cyncir Bowers in hopes the agile skill player could make magic happen.

With wideout Jeff Weimer and tight end Jacob Barrick delivering impact lead blocks, Bowers was able to do just that โ€“ he found the room to get upfield towards the first down marker before cutting back across the field, making one defender miss and dashing behind a teammate before splitting to Sun Devils' defenders and taking off for an eventual touchdown. The 90-yard score is the fourth-longest pass in program history.

2. Scotty Fox's 75-yard touchdown to Jeff Weimer

After the Sun Devils took an early 15-3 lead on a pair of consecutive touchdowns and a two-point conversion, West Virginia needed an answer in the worst way, and true freshman Scotty Fox Jr. stepped up to the plate. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Fox took a quick drop back before immediately eyeballing Jeff Wemer running an inside seam route, and placed the ball directly in his hands for an explosive 75-yard score to keep the Mountaineers in the game early.

3. Greg Genross Blocks A Field Goal

The Mountaineers got their first blocked field goal a week after their first blocked punt. With the Sun Devils up 22-10 and looking to extend the lead to two touchdowns, they lined up for a 46-yard field goal attempt. Senior tight end Greg Genross, who has played very little since arriving in Morgantown before last season, was on his second week of duties on the field goal block unit and capitalized on a major opportunity.

Using his lengthy 6-foot-6 frame, Genross jumped like a front row volleyball player trying to secure a game-winning block at the net, and got his hands on Arizona State's kick, deflecting it to the side and keeping the game within 12 points. The Mountaineers went and scored a touchdown to bring the game within five on the next drive.
