Many people around the WVU football program seem to think true freshman quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. has a bright future, and he continues to rack up milestones in his first season that make it hard to disagree with that assessment.
The Mountaineers dropped to 4-7 overall and fell out of bowl season contention with a heartbreaking 25-23 loss to Arizona State on Saturday, but fans are trying to remain hopeful about the trajectory of the program. And much of that has to do with Fox. The young gunslinger finished the game against the Sun Devils 19-of-31 passing for 353 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. And with that performance, Fox continued to solidify his spot in the Mountaineers' record books.
Fox already set the program record for most passing yards by a true freshman with 301 yards against TCU, and on Saturday his 353-yard performance through the air marked the second-best passing performance of all time by any freshman, first-year or redshirt, in program history. It was the most passing yards by any category of freshman since redshirt freshman Ford Childress threw for 359 yards against Georgia State in 2013.
Fox also connected with halfback Cyncir Bowers on a 90-yard touchdown pass to take a fourth-quarter lead while facing a 3rd & 27 – that pass stands as the fourth-longest pass in program history.

It's safe to say that while Scotty Fox Jr. has not been perfect since taking over the starting role five games ago for the Mountaineers, he's demonstrating he has the ability to run the offense well and make big plays as a freshman. That is a good sign for the Mountaineers, who played quarterback roulette in starting four different signal callers this year, that their future star at the position might already be on the roster.
