The West Virginia Mountaineers are headed to Omaha for the College World Series for the first time ever.
The Mountaineers punched their ticket to the biggest stage in college baseball on Saturday after dominant back-to-back wins over Cal Poly in the Morgantown Super Regional, breaking the program record for most wins in a single season for the second consecutive year in the process in front of a record crowd.
After the game, head coach Steve Sabins was asked about the history-making bid to Omaha, and he pulled no punches in making it clear to everyone just how special this achievement is for the program, and that this has long been the goal since he joined Randy Mazey's staff as an assistant over a decade ago.
“Mountaineers are going to Omaha. 135 years in the making. Pretty special.”

“This is why I came here 11 years ago. … to be the best in the world.”

"Mountaineers are going to Omaha. 135 years in the making. Pretty special," Sabins said. "This is I came here 11 years ago...to be the best in the world."
Sabins also admitted that he was on the verge of tears in the ninth inning as the game wound down due to all the "sacrifice" that has contributed to the team's run to Omaha.

And it's hard not to be a little bit emotional for him. After all, when former head coach Randy Mazey took over the program in 2013, there had been discussions leading up to the hire about whether or not the baseball program should be discontinued.
And since Sabins joined Mazey's staff in 2016, the program has hosted two NCAA Regionals and made three NCAA Super Regional appearances, but Omaha was one accomplishment that had continued to elude the Mountaineers.
Now, Sabins and West Virginia have the chance to, as he put it, be "the best in the world," as the Mountaineers will open action in the College World Series next weekend against the Troy Trojans.
