WVU baseball saw their season come to an end on Wednesday with a loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the College World Series semifinals. But even with the historic campaign coming to a close short of a national championship, there are plenty of reasons for West Virginia fans to celebrate.
The Mountaineers saw thier season come to a close with a 47-17 record, which marks the winningest season in program history. WVU advanced to the College World Series for the first time in program history, and then fought their way to the Final Four in Omaha. They hosted an NCAA Regional for just the third time ever, and hosted an NCAA Super Regional for the first time ever.
Without a doubt, the 2026 season – particularly the postseason run – was a special moment in time for the Mountaineers and for West Virginia sports history. That seemed to be something that all fans agreed upon following the loss to the Tar Heels. And it was a sentiment that was also shared by West Virginia head coach Steve Sabins, who drove home what all Mountaineers fans are likely thinking about this season's efforts.

"Couldn't be more proud of this group of kids," Sabins said. "What they were able to do and what they were able to accomplish is nothing short of miraculous."
"If you're going to go down, we obviously set our sights on winning a national title, and we believed we were capable of doing that. We fell short of that goal, but these kids stuck together through thick and thin and adversity. What they were able to accomplish gave hope and belief and excitement to a state and to a university."
The 2026 campaign will certainly be an all-timer for West Virginia fans, and Steve Sabins made a perfect observation on all the reasons fans are thrilled with what the Mountaineers have done this season. And with Sabins still at the helm, multiple starters set to return, and momentum at an all-time high, the program is trending in the right direction to ultimately capture a national championship.
