The West Virginia Mountaineers made a historic run to the College World Series this past year, so it was easy to forget some of early-season turmoil surrounding the program, such as the dismissal of star pitcher Chase Meyer from the program.

Despite being a preseason All-American, Meyer was kicked off the team by Sabins fairly quickly when locker room problems reportedly arose, and by the time the Mountaineers made it to Big 12 play, the man many assumed would be the program's ace pitcher this season was an afterthought.

Now that the offseason is here and the transfer portal action is in full swing, we now know where Meyer will end up next season. He will be sticking around the Big 12 for another season, as he has committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils – another top program in the league.

There were a lot of questions as to whether Sabins, in just his second year at the helm of the program, made the right decision by so easily letting Meyer go. Now, with hindsight, there's little question as to it's effect on the team – and whether or not Meyer would have helped the team even more, no one is complaining about the run to the semifinals of the College World Series made without him.

But now, Sabins could be on a collision course with his former pitcher. Each team play's 10 of the 13 possible conference opponents each season, so there is a high likelihood that Meyer has to face the Mountaineers next year. And with the Mountaineers having made the trip out west for their series with the Sun Devils in 2026, Meyer will likely have to face a rabid West Virginia crowd during the series.

So keep a close eye on the Big 12 baseball schedule once it is released this fall, and mark your calendars if you see a weekend series scheduled between the Mountaineers and Sun Devils – because it will be a bit more personal of a showdown than it has been in recent years.
