WVU baseball has started their season in almost perfect fashion -- after a three-game sweep over Jacksonville University, WVU turned around and executed a four-game sweep over Lipscomb University this past weekend. Now, the Mountaineers are undefeated late in February.

Hot bats, great relief pitching, and quality starting pitching have all contributed to a strong start to the season for the Mountaineers. After a 5-4 Monday win over Lipscomb in extra innings, thanks to a home run belted by Sam White, the Mountaineers secured their seventh win and second series sweep of the 2025 season.

WVU Baseball Keeps Their Brooms Handy

Monday's win capped WVU's second series sweep of the year, and it came ultimately because of White's timely home run in the 10th inning. Aside from the late game-winning drama of White's homer, Skylar King received some national media praise for an outstanding diving catch in centerfield during the series finale. The native of Columbia, South Carolina, is not only a big factor offensively but is also producing some big-time plays in the field.

Pitcher Reese Bassinger didn't hit the mound until the 8th inning, but earned the win for the Mountaineers with three consecutive hitless innings to end the game, which included two strikeouts for the senior. Bassinger adds his first win of the season to his personal stats, which already included three saves in the first six games.

The Mountaineer pitching was also consistent at limiting runs for the Lipscomb offense during the doubleheader on Sunday. Securing the shutout in Game 2 of the series on on Sunday, Robby Porco and Chase Meyer combined to go seven innings while eliminating scoring threats from Lipscomb in Three other WVU relievers closed out the final two innings to complete the shutout.

Game Three of the series and the second of Sunday's doubleheader saw similar results. Talented starter Gavin Van Kempen did a solid job allowing the only two runs Lipscomb scored during either game Sunday. Van Kempen and Carson Estridge were the only pitchers needed to secure the doubleheader sweep. Estridge was phenomenal out of the pen, finishing with a line of 4.1 innings pitched with two earned runs allowed, two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.

In Game One of the series former D2 standout Griffin Kirn was not as great on the mound in his second start of the year as his first start. However. Kirn was able to keep WVU in the game and the offense was good enough to earn the win.

This all combines for the Mountaineers currently sitting at 7-0 to start the season -- the first time the program has achieved such a feat since 1966. According to Gold and Blue Nation reporter Ryan Decker, the 7-0 perfect start to the season has only been accomplished seven times in the history of WVU baseball.

The red-hot Mountaineers will have their home opener on Wednesday when the Ohio Bobcats come to Morgantown. Ohio is struggling on the season starting an abysmal 1-5 to begin 2025. The Bobcats are getting outscored by opponents 42-28. The one-game set against the Bobcats is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Wednesday and will be aired on ESPN+. Can the Mountaineers go 8-0? WVU fans will be watching to see.
