Rich Rodriguez Hopes To Have "Some Semblance" Of Depth Chart For WVU Football Soon

As WVU football is into their third week of preseason camp, Rich Rodriguez and his staff have had 12 days of practice and other preseason activities to evaluate a roster that is completely new to most of them, and features over 70 new athletes joining the program in total. This past Saturday, Rodriguez had his team go head-to-head in their first fully live intra-squad scrimmage of camp.

In the days leading up to that first scrimmage, Rodriguez seemed hopeful that seeing his team go against each other in a game-type situation would help him clarify his depth chart for the upcoming season a good bit. But on Monday, Rodriguez said that it left “a lot more decisions to be made” regarding exactly who takes the field with the first team on August 30 when the Mountaineers open their season against Robert Morris.

On Tuesday, Rodriguez laid out the week ahead for his team at a post-practice press conference, indicating that he’ll have his player in pads two more times this week. That will include a longer scrimmage that will take place on Saturday, and Rodriguez once again seemed to believe that the scrimmage will go a long way in determining the depth chart.

"I think I mentioned yesterday we'll go full pads again Thursday, have a long scrimmage on Saturday, and then try to get some semblance of a depth chart after that,” Rodriguez said.

Some people on social media did take notice that when Rodriguez was discussing what he calls an ‘answer sheet’ that he creates for each game – typically with ‘answers’ for an opponent’s strategies and playbook – he held up a sheet that seemed to disclose what could possibly be his offensive depth chart for the Mountaineers while mimicking holding a play sheet in front of his face.

But Rodriguez did not actively indicate his depth chart was finalized at any position during his press conference, and not every name was clearly legible on screenshots of the depth chart due to print size and distance from the camera. In any case, fans can expect that the depth chart will (hopefully) come together within the next week or so, given the starters time to settle into their roles before the week of the first game – though don't expect an answer on starting quarterback until the team takes the field against Robert Morris.
