On October 25th, the West Virginia Mountaineers will be back in Morgantown for a home game at Milan Puskar Stadium for the first time since September 27th. Familiar Big 12 foe TCU will be making its first trip to West Virginia since 2022. Let’s go behind enemy lines and get familiar with the 5-2 (2-2) TCU Horned Frogs.
TCU Horned Frogs
TCU jumped out to an impressive 3-0 start in non-conference play, picking up wins over UNC and SMU. This start to the season led to the Horned Frogs being ranked 24th in the AP Poll to begin conference play.
Since starting Big 12 action, TCU has lost games on the road to Arizona State 27-24 and to Kansas State 41-28. But they've beaten Colorado at home 35-21, and picked up a 42-36 home win over Baylor last week.
Numbers to Know:
21
TCU Quarterback Josh Hoover has thrown 21 touchdown passes this season. He’s tied with Sawyer Robertson of Baylor for tops in the Big 12 in the department. He’s also 2nd in Big 12 passing yardage leaders, behind only Robertson. The veteran quarterback who has spent his entire career at TCU has impressed so far this season.
603
TCU’s leading receiver, Eric McAlister is putting together a sensational season with 603 yards and 7 touchdowns through the team’s first seven games. For perceptive, West Virginia’s three leading receivers, Cam Vaughn, Rodney Gallagher and Grayson Barnes, have combined for just 606 yards this season. McAlister’s 603 yards have him ranked 12th in the nation, and his seven touchdown catches tied for 5th.
4
TCU safety Jamel Johnson has picked up four interceptions in 2025. A junior defensive back who earned playing time as a freshman and significant time as a sophomore has taken his game to another level in 2025. His four interceptions leave him just one behind the nation’s leaders, who are tied at five.
5.2
The TCU ground game seemed to figure things out a bit in last week’s win over Baylor. En route to their 42 points, the Horned Frogs ran the ball 38 times for 196 yards, good for an average of 5.2 yards per carry. They were led by Kevorian Barnes’ 106 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Prior to this showing, TCU struggled mightily on the ground through their first three conference games, totaling just 176 yards. These numbers were largely skewed due to Arizona State’s six sacks against the Horned Frogs, but the first three games of Big 12 play saw TCU average just 2.16 yards per carry. Now that the run offense might be figured out, WVU won't be able to try and sell out defending Hoover's passing attack.
