If you walked away from WVU football's season-opening win on Saturday impressed with the Mountaineers' offensive depth, you weren't the only one -- even the team's starting quarterback found himself feeling the same way.
Nicco Marchiol, who earned the starting nod for West Virginia against Robert Morris and proved exactly why he deserved it. He made multiple impressive plays with both his arm and his legs, and in terms of his passing performance he was nearly perfect -- going 17-for-20 with 224 yards and one touchdown. But in the postgame press conference, he gave his receiving corps a ton of credit for being able to put together such an effort -- and indicated he thinks he has the best group of targets in the Big 12 Conference.
"That's the awesome thing about this, is there's going to be completions. And I mean, having receivers like we have, man, I mean, it was clear we might be the deepest team in the Big 12," Marchiol said.
WVU QB Nicco Marchiol says there will always be completions in this offense and calls the Mountaineers the deepest team in the Big 12.

The West Virginia Mountaineers completed passes to seven different players on Saturday -- four wide receivers (Jaden Bray, Oran Singleton Jr., Cam Vaughn, and Logan Ramper), two tight ends (Grayson Barnes, Jacob Barrick), and one tailback (Jahiem White) bringing in receptions. Vaughn, who appeared on the preseason Biletnikoff Award Watch List, led the team with seven receptions for 126 yards and one touchdown: he took the seventh most snaps on the team (43) and was graded out by PFF at 88.4 overall, the fourth-highest graded player on the team.
Tight end Colin McBee and wideout Jordan McCants were also targeted during the game, and five receivers and tight ends (Jarod Bowie, Preston Fox, Rodney Gallagher III, Ryan Ward, and Jeffrey Weimer) saw action on 10 or more snaps.
While the passing numbers weren't necessarily incredible -- primarily due to the team racking up 392 rushing yards on 52 total carries -- they were efficient. And it seems that the Mountaineers have the skill in their receiving corps to make a little magic happen this season.
